Do you really own your forum?

    For those of you who have a free hosted forum (proboards, forumotion, etc), do you really own your forum? Are the people who are in charge of that free hosting service are the true owners? Are you able to make a backup and take your forum somewhere else?

    I know with Jcink, the owner of that is quite happy to allow you to take your backup and move it to your own hosting and forum software of choice but to my knowledge, that is the only person I know of that does it.

    All of the others, I do not believe any of the content is really 'yours' and I do not believe you own the forum being that if you decide you want to change from free to paid hosting or to another software, you would need to start again.

    I would advise staying away from free forum hosting because you really don't own the content. You can get a shared hosting plan for $2.99 a month and throw up SMF or phpBB and have your own forum that you own and control. And if you chose to, it's an easy upgrade to paid forum software.
